Pro San Gottardo Foundation: Preserving the Myth

After more than a century of management by the Lombardi family, the transition to the Pro San Gottardo Foundation marked the beginning of a new era. Established on February 22, 1972, the Foundation works to safeguard the historical identity of the Pass and the beauty of its iconic symbols through constant investment and meticulous restoration.

Key milestones of our enhancement efforts:

  • 1973 – 1975: Rebirth of the Old Hospice (renovation of the roof and rooms).

  • 1975 – 1982: Opening of the Youth Hostel and modernization of services (post office and kiosk).

  • 1981 – 1982: Conservative restoration and reconsecration of the ancient Chapel.

  • 1982 – 1989: Recovery of the "Vecchia Sosta" (Old Sust) and inauguration of the National Museum (1986).

  • 1990 – 1994: Renovation of the Albergo San Gottardo (formerly Monte Prosa).

  • 2008 – 2010: The Old Hospice is renovated and proclaimed a European Cultural Heritage site.

  • 2020 – 2022: Structural restoration of the "Vecchia Sosta" and a new multimedia exhibition for the Museum.

  • Today, the Foundation continues to look toward the future, ensuring that the St. Gotthard Pass remains a living bridge between cultures, eras, and generations.
